What Is a Gadwal Saree?
A Gadwal saree is a traditional saree woven in and around Gadwal, a town on the banks of the Krishna river, about 190 km from Hyderabad. The classic Gadwal has a light body (cotton, or silk in the pattu versions) with a contrasting silk border and pallu, finished with gold or silver zari.
What makes it special is the joint. The border is attached to the body using an interlocking weft technique, locally called kuppadam or kotakomma. The pallu is joined to the body in the same way, with no stitching. This takes three shuttles and a lot of skill, and it is the main sign of a true Gadwal weave.
Because the body is light and the border is strong, a Gadwal saree drapes easily, holds its pleats, and is comfortable for a full day of rituals or a wedding.
A Short History of Gadwal Sarees
Gadwal weaving goes back roughly 200 years, to the time when Gadwal was the seat of a small kingdom, the Gadwal Samsthanam. The royal family invited skilled weavers to the town and supported the craft, and the sarees were first known as Mathiampeta sarees before taking the name of the town.
Gadwal sarees were long worn as pooja sarees for temple visits and festivals, which is why temple borders, kumbham motifs, peacocks and buttas are so common. Today the weave carries a Geographical Indication (GI) tag, which officially links the name “Gadwal saree” to this region.
Types of Gadwal Sarees
Pure Silk Gadwal (Pattu)
Silk body with silk border and zari pallu. The choice for weddings, muhurtham and grand functions.
Gadwal Sico
“Sico” means silk plus cotton. A cotton-feel body with a silk border and pallu. Light, festive and easy to wear.
Gadwal Cotton
Breathable cotton body with zari or contrast borders. Ideal for daily wear, office and summer functions.
Semi Gadwal & Semi Silk
The Gadwal look with blended yarns at a friendly price. Great for gifting and regular festive wear.
Brocade Gadwal
Rich zari work spread across the body. Grand, heavy-looking, and still easy to drape.
Gadwal Dupattas
Pure silk dupattas with kuttu and temple borders. Pair them with plain kurtas or lehengas.
Borders and Motifs to Know
- Kuttu border – the interlocked border that defines a true Gadwal.
- Temple border – the kumbham or gopuram triangle pattern, the classic pooja saree look.
- Butta work – small zari motifs (peacock, leaf, diamond, flower) spread across the body.
- Checks – traditional small and big checks, very popular in sico and cotton.
- Mercerised cotton – cotton with a soft natural sheen, ideal for daily elegance.
How to Identify a Genuine Gadwal Saree
- Check the joint. On the back side, the border and pallu should be interlocked with the body in the weave, not stitched or pasted on.
- Feel the weight. Real Gadwal sarees are known for being light, even with a heavy zari border.
- Look for the Silk Mark tag. A pure silk saree certified by the Silk Mark Organisation of India carries a Silk Mark label. On our website, certified pieces show the Silk Mark logo and the tag number (for example G-12897886) on the product page, so you can match it with the tag on the saree you receive.
- Look for the Handloom Mark. Government-certified handloom sarees carry the Handloom Mark label. We show this logo only on sarees that actually carry it.
- Buy close to the source. Machine-made copies are common online. Buying from a shop in Gadwal itself is the simplest way to be sure.
Honest note: our collection includes both handloom and powerloom sarees. A saree is certified handloom or pure silk only when its product page shows the Handloom Mark or Silk Mark logo. If a page has no logo, it is not certified, and we say so clearly.

Which Gadwal Saree for Which Occasion?
- Wedding and muhurtham: pure silk Gadwal pattu with a wide kuttu or temple border and a rich zari pallu.
- Pooja, festivals and Bathukamma: sico or silk Gadwal in bright colours with temple borders.
- Office and daily wear: Gadwal cotton or mercerised cotton with a slim border.
- Gifting: semi Gadwal or a Gadwal silk dupatta. Easy to love, easy on the budget.
Caring for Your Gadwal Saree
- Dry clean silk and sico sarees, especially for the first few washes.
- Wash cotton Gadwal sarees separately in cold water with a mild detergent, and dry them in shade.
- Iron on the reverse side on low to medium heat. Avoid pressing directly on the zari.
- Store wrapped in a soft cotton cloth, and refold every few months so the folds do not crack the zari.
Gadwal Sarees: Frequently Asked Questions

The silk border and pallu are joined to the body by an interlocking weave (kuppadam), with no stitching. Combined with a light body and fine zari, this makes Gadwal sarees both grand and comfortable.
Are Gadwal sarees GI tagged?
Yes. Gadwal sarees have a Geographical Indication (GI) tag, which links the name to the Gadwal weaving region of Telangana.
What is the difference between Gadwal silk and Gadwal sico?
A pure silk Gadwal has a silk body. A sico Gadwal has a cotton-feel body with a silk border and pallu, so it is lighter and usually more affordable.
